Surgical treatment of carotid disease is called carotid endarterectomy (CEA). This consists of an incision approximately 8 cm long on the anterior neck. Typically, after the blockage is removed, the artery is closed using a patch to prevent narrowing of the blood vessel. The operation generally lasts 2 hours and requires a general anesthetic. The hospital stay is typically one night.
